Definitions

  • Competency: The unit of measure used to indicate the amount of learning required to achieve the prescribed student learning outcomes. One competency is equivalent to one traditional semester credit of learning
  • Mastered: A grade of Mastered at the completion of the competency is equal to a passing grade for a traditionally graded course.
  • Not Mastered: A grade of Not Mastered is equivalent to a failing grade for a traditionally graded course.
  • In-Progress: A grade of In-Progress may be granted to a student in agreement with their instructor if the student requires more time to complete the competency than the allotted semester time. The “IP” indicator will be listed in place of a grade until the student has completed the competency.
  • Online-Asynchronous: All courses in Competency Based Education programs at KU are online-asynchronous, meaning they have no set meeting time or pattern and are self-paced courses completed 100% online.

FAQs

Competency-based education programs are a learning model that measures progress through demonstrated mastery of skills and knowledge rather than time spent in class.

Previous experience and existing knowledge may allow learners to progress more quickly through familiar content areas. At this time transfer credit is not accepted for competency based education programs.

Yes, students in the CBE programs are eligible for financial aid. More information regarding financial aid can be found on their website

CBE programs are offered in an online-asynchronous setting. Competencies are self-paced and can be completed at any time within the term.

You pay one flat rate per term, not per class or credit hour.

  • $4,165 per 16-week term (Fall and Spring)

  • $2,083 per 8-week term (Summer)

Because tuition isn’t tied to individual courses, your total cost depends on how quickly you move through competencies. Make more progress in a term, and you may need fewer terms overall.
